I lift my lamp. Does it illuminate a golden door of welcome, opportunity, and kindness? Or is it tawdry neon throwing cold light on gold-plated greed and small-minded callousness? With this artwork and in my heart, I’m praying for the golden light of opportunity our country has always so imperfectly represented.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore… send these,” that we may love them and recognize ourselves.
